Who We Are
The Mid-Sussex Area Bridleways Group is an independent voluntary organisation, which was formed in 1978. It operates in the area between the River Adur in the West, the River Ouse in the East, and Balcombe to the North. This area covers 300 square miles and includes approximately 140 miles of bridleways.
We attract as members, those who wish to protect and improve the bridleway network in Mid Sussex for horse riding, walking and cycling.
At a local level we have a network of members who have a detailed knowledge of the bridleways, and any problems associated with them. Members can refer to local area representative and/or the MSABG committee to help them with any bridleway issues.
At a regional level, members of the committee often represent users of the bridleways of Mid Sussex in discussions with Councils and other regional and national organisations.
Mid Sussex Area Bridleways Group is affiliated to the British Horse Society, the Byways and Bridleways Trust and the Open Spaces Society.
What are Bridleways?
Bridleways are rights of way for horse riders, walkers, and cyclists. They are part of the Public Highway system of England and Wales, and are protected by numerous Acts of Parliament.
Many bridleways are ancient roads established centuries ago and, although protected, they are also endangered. They are threatened by modern road building, by urban development, and by neglect.
It is primarily the job of the County Councils to maintain bridleways, but their budgets are very limited. As a result they can easily be overlooked when development plans are being considered, and overlooked when maintenance is overdue.
The Mid-Sussex Area Bridleways Group is dedicated to safeguarding your rights.
Whether you ride, walk or cycle, bridleways are vital to your enjoyment and safety.
