Bridleway Information

Bridleway Responsibilities

Cutting back vegetation – the landowner is responsible for keeping hedges and overhang cut back to allow free passage of the bridleway to a height of 10ft for horse riders. If you are on good terms with the landowner it is often most expedient to ask him politely if he could do the clearing. If not you can notify the appropriate Local Authority and have them enforce the issue. This can often take some time. Note that the landowner may not wish to cut back during the bird nesting season. Also note that the cutting back does not include vegetation which is growing ON the bridleway surface, even if it is a result of self-seeding from overhanging trees. Everything to do with the surface of the bridleway is the Local Authorities’ responsibility.

Rubbish dumped on bridleways – this should be reported to the Cleansing Department of the appropriate District Council (Mid Sussex/ Lewes/ Horsham) or Brighton and Hove City Councils.
