Bridleway Information

West Sussex County Council Rights of Way Department Interactive Map

The following article from MSABG’s Spring 2005 provides a sledgehammer approach to using the imap facility. If anyone would like to provide narrative of a more refined way of using this wonderful facility please contact Hilary at chairman@midsussexbridleways.org.uk

The WSCC Rights of Way department have provided us riders with a great new tool. The council’s web site has a wonderful ‘imap’ facility which includes annotatations of all dedicated bridleways in the county!

Go Play!

To use the imap facility

  • Go to the council’s website, www.westsussex.gov.uk. The screen includes a list -
  • Click on the “Leisure and Tourism” entry. On the next screen –
  • Click on “Public Rights of Way” then, on the next screen –
  • Click on “Interactive Maps” (There is some information that you can read and also at the bottom right hand corner when you are using the imap facility you can click on “help”for information.)
  • Click on “Launch the map” – be patient – it sometimes takes a little while to load!

At this point you can do lots of things! However, as a taster, suppose you want to look at a particular bridleway that you know, to see how it relates to it’s neighbouring routes. You can just point to the (approx) area on the map and click. If you were not very accurate you can use the left, right, up and down arrows at the edges of the map. You can carry on pointing, clicking and going up/down etc until you see the area you want! (There are quicker ways if you know the magnification you want or know the OS reference - however this sledgehammer approach works).

To get a larger image point to the area you want to see and click on it again.Keep pointing and clicking and, lo and behold, even more magnification. Look closely and you will even see the Bridleway number written alongside the route.

Wonderful additional facilities are that you can submit a path problem report (or any other feedback) directly from this page. The age-old problem of not knowing the official name of the bridleway has gone away. Even if your eyesight is not good enough to pick up the path number from the map, the OS reference of your pointer position appears in the bottom left hand corner – magic – so quote this to identify a problem area!

Thank you WSCC Rof W department!
